-Students will demonstrate creativity.
Students meet once every four days for 45 minutes of art class. Here are some example past second grade projects:
For a service learning art with heart, second graders have been collaging cards for local nursing homes. Thank you Isaiah and his mom for delivering some of them for us to cheer the residents at Countryside!
Koi Fish Ponds
Students created a mixed media koi pond for their fundraiser project.
Greek Amphora
Ancient Greeks used ceramic amphora to store water or other drinks. Often, Greek artists would adorn the pottery with painted images of celebrated heroes. Our second graders last year followed this tradition, creating a portrait of a personal hero on their vase. This year, we are going 3-D and making paper mache amphora.
Second graders created a Croc-o-Nile for our recent art show with their crocodiles swimming near their pharaoh portraits and scarab beetles. They started off with learning how to create a hollow font (bubble letters) filled with line design patterns. Then they wove paper strips and added legs, 3-D eyes and snouts and finished with stamping. We used sponges, carboard, and marker lids to show visual texture for the scales. I enjoyed seeing all the creative ideas students came up with to make theirs unique. Can you see which one is holding a microphone? What a diva.
Second Graders have been learning about Las Caux Cave and creating cave art using oil pastels and paint. Students learned that drawing predates writing, just like they learned how to draw before they learned to write. Ask your student how prehistoric artists signed their artwork.
Mixed media pussy willow artworks. Students made 3-D symmetrical butterflies with a chalk rubbing background.
Students have been paper mache machines lately. They are making armatures from newspaper and cardboard to make creatures (most are cats and dogs that look like their pets from home!).
