We have been making geometric shaped robots and talking about the difference between geometric and organic shapes after looking at Henri Matisse's art.
Kandinsky Inspired Line Design Patterns
First Graders listened to classical music while they created line design patterns using oil pastels. Then, they showed off their knowledge of the visible spectrum with a watercolor wash.
First Graders are creating koi nobori (fish shaped kites) to celebrate Japanese Children's Day. Thanks to ISU's teacher loaning program, the students got to see these real Japanese kites, yen coins, a kimono, greta (shoes), dolls and other artifacts from Japan. Look forward to see them decorating the stage for the "Songs of the Sea" music program . They created them by placing tissue paper squares on their fish and painting water over as a diffusing method. We can hardly wait to add colorful streamers, metallic crayon details and make our 2-d fish turn into 3-d cylinders!
First graders have been identifying the horizon line in a circus inspired art work. They mixed shades (adding black to a color to make it darker) and tints (adding white to a color to make it lighter) to create an elephant. Ask a first grade smartest artist how to make gray (black and white) and pink (red and white). We had so much fun adding glitter and gems and pointing out movement in famous circus themed works. I adore how this one has a whole color scheme with repetition! These first graders are amazing!

First graders started off our warm/ cool cityscape project with some competition. Each table had to sort their crayon bin into warm or cool colors, then we talked about the neutral colors we left in the bin because they didn't go in either. They did a great job!
